Langaha madagascariensis
—
Malagasy Leaf-nosed Snake
Also known as:
Madagascar Leaf-nosed Snake
This is the most famous snake on Madagascar, due to its very peculiar snout. It is fairly widespread in drier areas, but it's not easy to find due to its strictly arboreal nature and excellent camouflage among dry branches. I had not seen it in either of my two previous visits, so I really wanted to see one this time. The local guide found one just at the start of our first morning hike in this location, so we didn't need to wait too long.
Here is a list of all the reptiles and frogs I saw on this 2023 trip to Madagascar.
José was happy that we had seen a male Langaha, but he would not be satisfied until we had also seen a female. The next day, voilà! Note that the females also have a very silly schnozz, but quite differently shaped than the male's schnozz. Nobody really knows why.
You can see how well these snakes can be camouflaged in dry branches.
